But the more calculated, technical, and ultimately colorful inventors of progressive Thrash, a genre that blossomed handsomely after Watchtower’s debut in 1985, are what truly push the limits of Thrash and test its creative bandwidth. Blind Illusion on their new album “Wrath of the Gods”, achieve this to a degree that has seldom been approached, let alone passed, in the rest of Thrash history, just as they did 34 years ago on “The Sane Asylum”.

What is most impressive and revealing about this album, however, is not the technical ability of the musicians involved (although there is nothing wrong with their ability). It’s the pure brilliance that shapes every song, and the demonstration of how focusing on the art of songwriting will work wonders for a band. “Straight as the Crowbar Flies” introduces us first to the astral energy this album exudes, with catchy riffing and Marc Biedermann’s raspy, growling vocals. The screeching guitar solos and the abrupt rhythm changes keep the song fresh, but the band’s incorporation of technical Thrash elements crossed with extremely catchy riffing and drum arrangements proves to be the strong attributes of this album. There are numerous instances where the band finds its virtue in slowing down, letting a power chord ring out, and then letting the drums restart and propel the song once again. When the band decides to let their guard down and get cagey or manic with the rhythm, it’s done so with precision and doesn’t come at the expense of the song structure. When they get technical, the notes still vibrate with emotion, and the song doesn’t just become a vacuum for skills to be shown off. This message is most evident in every song, which all feature catchy guitar licks and great guitar riffs. What Blind Illusion does best on this new masterpiece is deliver cleverly-written and fun songs with catchy riffs. At the heart of Thrash, that’s really all you can ask for. The effects of how masterfully composed this album is has lend the production a unique ethos that makes it feel human. For fans of well-played, original Thrash Metal 1988’s “Neurodeliri” is a must.

1988 seemed the right time for the world to finally see Bulldozer like they deserved to be, no more a Venom tribute band, but rather a truly peculiar band with its very own brand of music. In the light of these reflections, “IX” marked definitely a 180-degrees turn from the past, more than it did music-wise. It was finally the moment for the Milanese crew to ride their wave of popularity, maybe the band members expected it to be the best year for the band’s career so far. But then, in April, co-founder and former bassist Dario Carria committed suicide and complicated everything. AC Wild and mainly Andy Panigada were bewildered by the news, as fans were, and profoundly struck. Still, they managed to channel all the emotions of that tragedy in the songwriting for the follow-up to their breakthrough album “IX”, which incidentally would be their last full-length after their dissolution on good terms in 1990.

As a result, “Neurodeliri” possesses a drearier atmosphere which pops up every now and then. Carria also replaces AC Wild on the captivating album cover, which gives the right idea of coldness and desperation, especially if coupled with the title, referring the name of the band he created, but also being a synonym for a certain department of mental hospitals in Italian language. Regarding the music, the addition of keyboards, be it for atmospheric purposes like “Overture”’s somber, beautiful melody or the support at the riffs of the subsequent title-track, or again as a nice something extra like the amazing, power-infused duel with the guitar in the second half of “Art of Deception”, is mostly responsible for it.

“Neurodeliri” was Bulldozers last studio-album until they reformed in 2008, and given the undoubted high quality of it and of all their previous albums, one might ask himself why they never really achieved more than just a certain cult status. The reason is probably that Bulldozer were never keen on success and popularity, as they never compromised about their sound when most other Thrash Metal bands wimped out or changed their style at the end of the 80s when Thrash Metal became less popular. Bulldozer albums prior to “IX” had suffered from a bad production. We know raw production adds to the Black Metal aesthetic but when the guitars volume changes when it is not supposed to it becomes an issue. The mix here is balanced and the production is still very raw. This allows the instruments to roar, but still be at the correct volumes.

The music itself is much more thrash-sounding than previous efforts, but still manages to retain some black metal influences. A.C. Wild’s voice is evil and raspy as all hell, which makes for some great blackened vocals. The obvious highlights are “Desert!” and “Ilona the Very Best”. These songs are fairly complex, have great riffs, and awesome guitar solos, provided by Andy Panigada. These solos are fairly long by Black Metal standards, but we wouldn’t have it any other way, as they feel quite powerful and epic and really complete the songs. That with the “not metal” instruments often used give this album a unique sound.

This is an album any Thrash fan, Black Metal fan or even Speed Metal fan, should own.

Whatever, for fans of really well-played, original Thrash Metal, “Neurodeliri” (as well as the other Bulldozer albums) is a must.

Track Listing:

1. Songs like “Pay to Die” and “Re-Entry and Destruction” are impossible not to like, it’s extreme metal heaven (or hell, whichever you prefer), straight-forward, catchy and downright punishing.

It’s the lo-fi shoddy execution and production of the whole thing which adds so much character to this release and so many others from the same time frame, a character and feeling which is sadly lost in today’s tech and blast obsessed bands. In our books “Fuckin’ Death” is pretty much a classic of primitive Death Metal and when you consider when it originally was released that makes it all the more spectacular, and now that it’s finally seen a re-release it makes obtaining a copy something that won’t cause your bank account to have a fit.

TRACKLIST
CD 1: Fuckin’ Death
1. Death Metal history, the ultimate edition!

Death Strike need little introduction to anyone who would consider themselves seasoned in the realm of Death Metal, the legendary Paul Speckmann’s debut foray into the genre has garnered pretty much cult status now as a genre classic and not without good reason. This reissue of 1991 album compiles the debut demo from ‘85 together with four other tracks for the rather aptly titled “Fuckin’ Death”, and being brutally honest, could you possibly have a more suitable description for the sensory annihilation present on these recordings?

It’s that fact that half this material was recorded back in the mid-eighties that really makes it stand out, Death Metal was still in its infantile stages back then with extreme metal making a transition between the Crust influenced filth of Hellhammer and the ilk to a more brutal strain with bands like Possessed and Slaughter emerging out of the underground with a significantly more potent and brutal form of metal unlike anything heard before, and when you realize it came out at the same time as two monumental releases by the aforementioned bands you wonder why the fuck it never got quite as much attention as it was just as influential if not more so than those classics.

If you’re one of the unenlightened still wondering who the fuck Death Strike are, “Fuckin’ Death” was essentially just the first Master album under a different moniker, and along with Master’s debut and “On the Seventh Day...” are Death Metal classics. The first four tracks as previously mentioned are from 1985 and astonishingly ahead of their time. It’s basically ‘Hellhammer on crack’, fast brutal and utterly primal Death Metal with that huge hardcore influence shining through. Paul’s vocals are a maniacal and wretched reverbed howl that just add to the chaos conjured with Kirk’s unbridled leads, the d-beat styled drumming and thundering, bowel shaking bass.

1. It’s very much in the vein of old Entombed and Dismember, but they have weaved in their own sound. The riffs are fresh and killer and so is the energy surrounding this release. The musicianship is insurmountable and it is great that the Swedish Death Metal sound has stayed alive in bands such as Entrails. The music is downright brutal, the vocals and the guitar riffs are explosive. We would venture to say this is a top release for the year 2011.

For a band that pretty much lay dormant for nearly 20-years they came back pretty strong and brought some of the old country’s roots with them. Has this particular sound been done already to near-perfection? Yes, but you might offer a small reprieve for Entrails because, in all seriousness, they’re just insanely heavy and horrifically brutal from start to finish. You can see where bands like Bloodbath found that elite sound. The production is of top notch quality with every note shredded accordingly.
